EIGHT, WITH 271 TO COME •: exceptionally heavy poll ISSUE LIES BETWEEN LABOUR and • COALITION CANDIDATES An unusually keen contest in the Rotorua electorate, due to the presenee in the field of four strong candidates and the gravity of the issues to be decided, resulted in an exceptionally heayy poll yesterday, 9177 electors, including absentee and postal voters, recording. their votes, at the 65 booths in the electorate, equal to nearly 74 per cent of the total roll. The first return was received at the "Morning Post" office five minutes after the poll closed ancb by 7.30 p.m. a large crowd which later grew to record proportions had assembled outside the office to watch the results posted on ihe board. i As the evening wore on it was seen that the voting for the Coalitiofi candidate and rstiring member, Mr. C. H. Glinkard, > and the Lapour candidate, Mr. A. F. Moncur was extremely close, Mr. ~*vncur being in the lead until returns for over half of the ; .booths had been received and excitement reached a high pitch, each alteration in the figures being cheered by the supporters of the candidate favoured by the change. !: The figures, as they were received were also flashed on the screen at the Majestic Theatre. - Shortly after 11 p.m. the final available figures were received -- from the Returning Qfficer and it was thep seen that the result ~ depended upon the 213 absentee and 58, postal votes still to come, V Mr. Clinkard hav.ing a majority of only eight over his Labour opponent. - The totals reported last night are. — ' D.
