"SOUND TO THE CORE"
PRIMB MINISTER'S MESSAGE TO COUNTRY AFTER POLL DECLARED MANDATE TO COALITION WELLINGTON, last night. "New Zealand has shown itself to be ^ound to the core and the mandate that the electors have given the Coalition Government will go a long way towards an early restoration to prosperity," said the Rt.- Hon. G. W. Forbes, in concluding a statement made after the result of the election were announced. "The fight is now over and we can shake hands," continued Mr. Forbes. "We can put to one side any of the ill feelings that may have been aroused by the election contest, and get together again for the purpose'of dealing with the difficulties which are besetting the country. They affect every citizen of the community and it is only hy facing facts and making up our minds that we are going to deal with them in a practical way that we will overcome them. "The result is to me extremely encouraging. The Government had taken steps along the path of strict economy and reduction of expenditure. Sueh a policy could hardly he expected to arouse enthusiasm among the electors4. We were opposed to the Labour Party, which promised all sorts of expenditure, stating that economy was not necessary and that - the way to meet the situation was not • to adjust expenditure to meet reduced national income. We will meet in Parliament now with a feeling that ' we have a definite endorsement of the policy that was placed before t the electors. I feel confident that in facing these difficulties in a practical 3 'way, the Dominion will all the sooner • return to prosperity.
