MAORI ELECTIONS
SIR A. T. NGATA RETAINS SEAT BY LARGE MAJORITY OTHER SITTING MEMBERS RETURNED The elections for four Maori Parliamentary representatives were held yesterday resulting in the return of the sitting memhers by overwhehning majorities except in the Southern electorate, where Mr. T. Makitanara, the sitting member secured a majority of only 20 votes. In the Eastern Maori electorate which includes the Rotorua district, Sir Apirana Ngata, Minister of Native Affairs in the Coalition Government defeated his Ratana opponent, Mr. Pita Tamati Moko, by nearly 3500 votes in a total poll of 6608. At the time of going to press there were still seven returns to come in the Northern Maori electorate, but these cannot affect the result. The final figures had heen received for the Southern seat and it was not indicated whether there were further returns to come in the Eastern and Western electorates, but in each of these the leading candidate's margin is so large that the result cannot be in doubt. WESTERN MAORI Taite Te Tomo .... 4166 Ratana .... 2714 Eketone 291 Piahana 802 Takirihi 93 Wakarua .... 391 LOCAL FIGURES Returns from eight booths in the vicinity of Rotorua gave a sweeping majority to Sir Apirana Ngata, who polled a total of "406 votes to Mr. Pita Moko's 80.
