TO WHOM THE DEBT?
W. L.
RICHARDS.
To the Editor. Sir, — Referring to your article setting out the biographies of the candidates for the coming general election in today's issue, may I draw the attention of your readers to two most important -points. You mention that Mr. Clinkard, M.P., was a member of the first Rotorua Borough Council, whereas he was Rotorua's first Mayor. In referring to Mr. Vaile you state that Rotorua owes that gentleman a special debt of gratitude for his services as assessor, but I would point out that Rotorua paid him £5 5s per day for that service. At the same time the Mayor, Mr. Clinkard, prepared and marshalled the great volume of evidence placed before that committee and no remuneration was paid to either him or the numerous witnesses, many of whom gave much valuable time and service. The court sat for 15 days. Mr. Vaile received £5 5s per day. Mr. Clinkard and the witnesses received nothing. To whqm is the special debt of gratitude owing? — I am. etc.
Rotorua, 27/11/31.
