DRASTIC CUTS
ECONOMIES IN PUBLIC * WORKS DISTRICT ESTIMATES ."As a result of the withdrawal in the Supplementary Budget of 250,000 from the Main Highways Board's funds, the Public Works Department advised the Rotorua Borough Council yesterday that it had been necessary to make adjustments in the construction estimates for the year 1931-32. For the Rotorua-Tauranga direct road, the proposed vote of £410 for Ngongotaha to Ngawaro section had been reduced to £172. The proposed vote of £270 for the Awahou bridge had been entirely deleted and there was now; no provision being made for the bridge. Couneillors expressed regret at the curtailment of the vote, but the letter was received with a remark by the chairman (Cr. H. P. Ford) that the Council would simply have to accept the economies. Together with this letter, the district engineer for the Tauranga Public Works Department area, forwarded the Main Highways estimates for construction work in the district during the year, 1931-32. The only estimates applying to the Rotorua area were a sum of £640 for the Rotorua- Whakatane highway and £172 for the Ngongotaha-Ngawaro section of the Rotorua-Tauranga direct highway. The total estimate over the district was £15,136 and before the letter was received, it was pointed out that the estimate last year had been £60,000. The main items included in this year's district estimates, in addition to those mentioned, were: — Gisborne- Whakatane highway via Motu, £880; Papamoa-Mt. Maunganui Road, £172; Tauranga-Te Puke Road, £9200; Tauranga-Te Puke Road deviations, £2800; Kopuroa bridge, £38G
