The victim of the tragedy was Mr. William John Stephenson, of the steamer Kingswood, which was on a voyage from Middlesbrough to Russia. Stepenson's home was at Worwick Road, South Shields, and he leaves a widow and two sons. According to certain information Stephenson was returning to his ship when he was challenged by a Soviet sentry. The.soldier, apparently, did not receive a reply, and fired with, fatal effect. According to an official report by a Soviet agency, however, an utiknown person approached a military depot which was guarded by a sentry. Notwithstanding the sentry's warning, the unknown man drew close to the soldier, who tried to push him away with the butt end of his rifle. This bejng unsuccessful, the sentry fired into the air. The unknown man, who it was learned later was Mr. Stephenson, seized the barrel of the rifle. "The sentry escaped, and, shooting quite close, killed Stephenson," the official statement added.
