BEAUTY WEDS
ROMANCE OF FORMER M.C. LIFE GUARDS OFFICER. TRIBUTE OF FLOWERS. LONDON. Great secrecy was maintained about the plans, and np guests were invited from England, for the wedding at the village of Varenna, Lake Como, of Miss Madeleine Carroll, English stage and screen star, and Capt. Philip Astley, M.C., a former officer of the Life Guards. Flowers from every garden in the village decorated the little parish church of St. George. The village priest perf ormed the ceremony, and the congregation consisted mainly of villagers, many of whom, unable to squeeze into the church, gathered in the streets and hung out of windows to catch a glimpse of the bride. The ceremony was of the simplest character, and was conducted in Italian. Everyone could hear the emphatic "si" (yes) with which Capt. Astley responded, bat Miss Carroll's response was spoken almost in a whisper. So eager were the crowds to see the beautiful bride that the couple had literally to force their way through to the car. which was to take them first to Santa Mariharita Ligure, on the Genovese Rivera, and then to the Basque country, where they are to spend a quiet honeymoon. Capt. Astley, who won the M.C. at the age of 21 during the retreat from St. Quentin, has been wefi known at Yerona sinee childhood, for his mother, the late Lady Sutton, bought the Villa dei Cuppressi in 1906, and sinee it has come into his possession Capt. Astley has added many pieces to the choice old furniture with which it is enriched. Miss Carroll is a B.A. of Birmingham University, and was formerly engaged in teaching. Her last London part was in "After All;" at the Criterion. She and Capt. Astley met at a party given by Lord Milford Haven.
