OBSERVANT GUARD
PASSENGER'S BIG BOQK FOR A SHORT JOURNEY. SOUTHAMPTON. Noticing that a passenger in a Southampton to London train settle'd himself comfortably with a big hook, although he had only taken a ticket to the next station, Guard Alfred Lalles kept him under observation until he alighted at Raynes Park. At Wimbledon, the passenger, John Roland Robinson, 34, of Consfield Avenue, Motspur Park, was fined £1 with £5 5s costs for travelling without a tickpt. — Mr. Conolly, the company's solicitor, mentioned that the guard was noted for his intuition, and had never been wrong in aecusing a traveller. Lalles remarked that people did not take big books on short journeys, and that was why he suspected Robinson. Admitting the off'ence, Robinson stated that he had just returned from Canada, where he had been in the services of Lord Villingdon. He had only twopence in English money, and the train was about to start, so he took a ticket to the next station, in•tending to pay at Raynes Park in Canadian money.
