FARMERS' UNION URGES THAT ARBITRATION ACT BE AMENDED LOWER TARIFF ALSO WANTED

CHRISTCHURCH, Tues. At a conference of South Island branches of the Farmers' Union, held to-day, the following resolutions were carried: — "That the Government be urged to suspend all awards during the present period of economic stress and to amend the Industrial Coneiliation and Arbitration Act, to provide for voluntary arbitration and compulsory coneiliation. "That in order to combine a balanced Budget with a general reduction of taxation, which is essential to the recovery of prosperity, a thorough investigation of departmental expenditure should be made hy nonpolitieal expert authority. "That in order to reduce the cost of production and the cost of living in New Zealand, a drastic downward revision of the customs tariff is urgently needed and should he made as soon as the Budgetary position will permit." It was decided to commend the Governmient for the abolition of the graduated land tax, for departmental economies which it had made, and for the promise of a Royal Commission to investigate local body expenditure.
