THEFT OF POSTS
ACCUSED SAY THEY WERE TOLD TO "KEEP THEIR GATES SHUT" Two Waikare Maoris, King Winiata and William Reta who appeared in the Rotorua Magistrate's Gourt yesterday before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing 138 posts valued at £5 12s the property of another Maori named Paul Tahau. A Putaruru carrier, William John Rowe, wno was jointly charged on the same count, did not appear, but a plea of not guilty was entered hy Mr. J. D. Davys and the case was adjourned for a fortnight until Tahau, who is at present ill, is able to give evidence for the police. Winiata and Reta in evidence stated that on August 25, Rowe visited Waikare with a view to buying posts. According to both accused Rowe suggested that he should purchase a pile of posts which they informed him belonged to Tahau. Rowe, they said, advised them "To keep their gates shut and' it would he all right." Winiata was sentenced to fourteen days' imiprisonment with hard labour and 'Reta was admitted to a year's probation. Mr. R. A. Potter appeared for both these accused and entered a plea of guilty. *
