; REPEAL OF SECTION OF j COUNTIES ACT NOT SUPPORTED POWER BOUNDARIES ; . ... . ?..■ ••• • . ... . • ........ TKe' regular monthly meeting of the -Rotorua County Council was held yesterday. There were present; Coun-' billor H. "P. Ford in the chiar, and CoUffcillors W. Steele, A. L. Keith, J. J. 'Smyth, and J. E. Martin. An apology for 'absence was received from Cr. R. ''Copeland Smith; -A letter Was received from- the Main Highways Board, Wellington, stating that under the increased highways subsidies • such items as signposting, centre-line marking, and traffic inspection could now be included.
Power Board Boundaries '* The Under-Seeretary of the Public Workk Department, Wellington, wrote in connection with the proposal to include that portion of the Rotorua CoUnty' from the Tauranga County boundary to the Mangorew'a River as an ou'ter area in the Tauranga Electi'ic .Power Board's ditrict. The Department so'ught an indication of the Rcrbofua County Council's attitude towafds -the inclusion of this area, and polnted out that -such inclusion would not entail rating liability. It Was deeided to inform the Department that the Rotorua County had no ohjection to the district being extended along the lines indicated. . The Hauraki Plains County Council wrote requesting the council's support'for a remit to repeal Section 57 Of 'the Counties Act, 1920. This section is one disqualifying any ratepayer twhose rates have remained unpaid over a period of six months from participating in any county election Or' poll. After a brief discussion it was deeided that the council should inform the Hauraki Plains County Council that it could not see its way to support such a remit.
Mamaku Streets - Nineteen ratepayers and residents of Mamaku township forwarded a letter drawing attention to the state of Okarhiki Street, Mamaku and requesting that this street -should he metalled.- The matter was left in the hands of the engineer and Councillor Steele with power to act. A suggestion was received from the Ngongotaha branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to the effect that unemployed men might he used on mor'e useful work such as the preparation of metal dump and piece work. The clerk was instructed to inform: the branch that the council did hot eonsider it had authority to use unemployed men on piece work hut that it had already taken stepg to use a, " number of these men in the prepafation of metal dumps. Th'e monthly report of the engineer, Mr T. . Rohertson, was adopted.
