KNOCKED DOWN CHILD WHEltf RIDING ON WHAKA - FOOTHPATH ^ i.I ' »r" An 18-year-old youth, E. W. Lock& was yesterday fined £2 for riding . a bicycle on the foothpath on WhakjJ. Road. The charge followed an acci| dent when Locke knocked down , $ child who ran out of a gateway a| he was passing and was struck- by the handle bars of the bicycle. SenioW Sergeant Carroll, who appeared for the police, stated that a "number o$ complaints had been received re* garding cyclists using the footpath| instead of the cycle tracks which were provided. * -I Constable Mallabond produced ;a statement given by the defendant xtt which he admitted that he had;knock| ed down the child. Defendant said he had ridden on the foothpath ii| order to avoid the ruts on the cyc)q track. The little boy had run oiif suddenly in front of defendant and although he had swerved suddenly if avoid the child, it had been struck 1)^ the handle-bars and knocked down¥ Locke added, however, that the child got up immediately and as it did no|' appear to be injured, he continued on his way. . ■ t - - | ||, 3
