POSTPONED
HEAVY RAIN PREVENTS COMMENCEMENT OF GOLF TOURNEY As a result of the torrential rain which fell during Wednesday night and yesterday morning, the committee of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union, was compelled to postpone the eommencement of the New Zealand Ladies' golf championships set down for yes£erday. Sheets of water had rendered the course almost unplayable and after a short meeting and an inspection of the course, members of the committee decided to await more suitable conditions before commencing play. . As a result of the postponement of play, the inter-Island teams match will now be contested over the weekend and at the first bogey handicap on Thursday morning. The first round of the championship is to commenee this morning. The torrential rain which fell during Wednesday night and on Thursday morning, fiooded the course, making- it absolutely unplayable for the eommencement of the meeting. On the greens and fairways, water was lying to a depth of several inches and practically all the bunlcers were filled to the brim. A sheet of water, about 25 yards in width, stretched right across the first fairway, in such a position that it would have caught all the long drives and if play had commenced this pool alone would have kept a boy busy all day retrieving the balls driven into it. Number five green was the only one with the hole under water, but this hole, if necessary, could have been remade on a dry spot. The main obstacle to the eommencement of play was the condition of the approaches which were so sodden with surface water that in practically every case, they were unplayable.
