MR CLINKARB SAYS SYSTEM SHOULD NOT SURRENDER TO MOTORS ASKS FOR GUARANTEE
WELLINGTON, Thursday. Speaking in the House of Kepresentatives last night during the debate cn the resolution approving of the Railways Board's recommendations that construction work on railway Iines should be stopped, the member for Rotorua, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, said the completion of main trunk railways was essential if the railways were to be made to pay, and he could not see that Parliament would be warranted in de» fmitely stopping the work in pro•gress. He did, however, believe that the work should be suspended for about a year in order to relieve the national finances. If no guarantee could be given that the position would be reviewed, he could not see his way clear to vote for the resolution as it stood. He was not one of those who thought the railways should iov/er their colours to motor transport. Mr Clinkard voted with the Government on all divisions.
