-By Telegraph — Copyright) .
Rec. Oct. 5, 8.15 p.m. OTTAWA, Sunday. Declaring that as a result of the startling increase in the tariff rate againist goods from Great Britain and that British preference has been practically wiped out on products of the class and kind made in Canada, Mr. W. L. McKenzie-King, former Liberal Prime Minister and now Leader of the Opposition, criticised two recent decrees of the Government. He first fixed the rate of exchange in computing values for duty on British imports at 4.836 dollars in the pound sterling. The second decree imposes a special "dumping" duty on British imports of the kind or class made in Canada purchased at less than 4.836 dollars to the pound. These exchange rates were fixed by Order-in-Council. Mr. McKenzie-King asserted that they "represent a greater variation in Canadian fiscal policy than has ever been adopted by any Canadian Government without the consent of Parliament." Mr. McKenzie-King. predicts that they will aggravate the difficulty in the present situation both in Great Britain and Canada.
