VACUUM FREE-WHEEL.

An ingenious free-wheel mechan- | ism for cars which is operated by K vacuum and can be attached without | dismantling the transmission system 1 is announced in Chicago. Its worst: ~ possibility appears to be the likeli- _ hood of throwing an excessive strain 'j on the clutch mechanism. The unit is attached to the dash under the bonnet, and connected to the clutch pedal beneath the floorboards. It consists of a small cylinder and piston connected by a copper tube with the intake manifold. The piston is operated by the vacuum caused in ! the induction pipe by the idling of _ tho engine and its action releases ' the clutch. When the eccelerator pedal ! is pressed down and the engine speed increases, the vacuum is relieved, and the clutch engages smoothly. When the accelerator is released, allowing the motor to idle, the released clutch permits the car to free-wheel. The vacuum device can be cut out at will merely by pressing a button on the switchboard. It is very similar to . the vacuum servo brake system, with which motorists are already familiar.
