slow scoring BATSMEN DISAPPOINT ' IN MATCFifc AT SCARBOROUGH WEIR COMPLETES HIS 1000 RUNS SCARBOROUGH, Thursday. When the New Zealand cricketers opened their mateh yesterday against Mr Leveson-Gowers' XI, the Dominion batsmen made a somewhat disappointing showing. Dempster, . Mills, Pag"e and Talbot were dismissed before the luncheon adjournment. Mills was caught behind, Page at mid-off, and Talbot with an excellent catch by Duleepsinhji in the outfield. With only 53 on for four wickets, Blunt and Weir added 54 runs for the fifth wicket by steady batting after lunch. Lowry batted brightly before being dismissed by a fine catch by Jupp at mid-on. Merritt again hit freely. Weir's wicket fell last, Hobbs taking a brilliant one-hand catch at cover. It was a sound defensive innings, and of the highest value to the side. He obtained his 1000 runs for the tour in first-class matches. A slow wicket rendered Larwood innocuous. He did not bowl at top speed. Brown, although successful, was not as steady as usual. Hobbs and Sutcliffe batted for 70 minutes before stumps. The former played delightf ul _ shots. This is his only appearance this season against the New Zealanders. • Despite cold weather the attendance numbered 6000.
