SUCCESSFUL MEET AT WHAREPAINA.
(Our Own Corerspondent.)
SEYERAL GOOD RUNS.
WHAREPAINA, Monday. On Saturday for the first time in history the pink coats of the hunts- | men were seen and the music of a • pack in full ery heard, at Wharej paina, the occasion being a visit from j the Rotorua pack. I The meet assembled at Mr. Parn1 ham's homestead where twenty of the j Rotorua follawers were joihed by j about thirty local riders. After par- | taking of an excellent morning tea, j houhds were cast off and a swamp close to the homestead was drawn. Here a hare was quickly viewed away, hounds picking up the scent, giving tongue in great style and going very fast towards the hills. A good brisk run was obtained on this scent, hounds holdang well on the line until the hare ran into thick rabbit country, . where scenting beeame very difAcuit. Running into hard dry country, the scent became light and patehy and hounds had hard work holding to the line, their task being made more difAcuit by the large number of rabbits fouling the scent in all direetions. After a lot of elever slow scenting in the dry country, hounds were gathered and the field picked up, hounds going away very fast in full cry, what promised to be a good run eoming to an end after a run of about a mile when the scept failed. on a plough. After working Mr. Parnham's back country, where the rabbits were very numerous and gave considerable trouble in holding the pack together, a move was made to Mr. Handcock's property, where a patch of swampy ground was drawn. A strong hare was viewed, hounds quickly hitting the line and the best run of the day was made. This run took the field right through Mr. Handcock's property,- across the main road and towards Reporoa, where the scent failed on the hard road and hounds finally checked after a fast clean run of over two miles. Returning to Mr. Parnham's, another start was made and hounds were taken through Parnham's to Handcock's, where a turnip paddock was drawn. Hounds again found and the hare took refuge in a swamp too soft for horses to follow and as It was by now late in the afternoon hounds were called in and the field returned to Mr.. Parnham's homestead. After an excellent afternoon tea, which was greatly appreciated by the followers, the Master, Dr. H. Bertram thanlced the residents of Whare- . paina and Reporoa for their kindly hospitality, which had made possible a most enjoyable day.
