FUTURE OF POLAND.
RUSSIAN AND HUN COMPETITION. RUSSIA URGED TO BE DEFINITE. THE HUN WANTS POLISH SOLDIERS. Received Aug. 18, 1 p.m. Petrograd, Aug. 17, A definite Russian pronouncement as to Poland’s futnrs is expected daily. The censorship has been released, permitting frank discussion. Many writers point out that whereas Russia has given Poles only vague promises Germany has already granted several ardently sought poitical rights. The tenor of the discussion has occasioned a widespread belief that Russia hopes to anticipate Germany’s imminent “proclamation of autonomy. It is fully believed that the Kaiser’s visit to Warsaw’ the next tew days foreshadows a proclamation. Russian Poles are urging the Ministry of the Interior to take steps to declare that Germany is really aiming, to enlist the Poles in the German army. It is estimated that there are 1,200,000 lit fcr military service. - BRITISH OPERATIONS. A MINOR SUCCESS. Loudon, Aug. 17. Sir Douglas Haig states We stopped the enemy attacks west of Monutznet Farm and exploded a mine west of Vimj and occupied the crater.
