THE CAPTURE OF GORIZIA

HOW IT IS VIEWED. A JUMBLE OF EMOTIONS London, August 10. Indignation is expressed in Vienna at the fall of Gorizia, and it is stated that the Archduke Joseph may be recalled. ' It is reported that the AustroHungarian Socialists are secretly encouraged by the Government in agitating for a separate peace. Paris is excited, declaring that Gorizia was the Austrians’ Verdun, Gustave Herve, writing in La Victoire, says: The breaking up of the enemy has begun. To-day it was Gorizia, to-morrow it will be Lemberg; and then, in a few weeks, a general debacle. The British press is cautious, unanimously pointing out that it is possible Austria is collapsing, but Germany is still strong. The Times points out that there is the great natural fortified Carso plateau, of which the Isonzo valley Is a moat, and this must be conquered before Trieste can be reached.

BEFORE THE BATTLE. GENERAL CAOORNA’S ORDER. BE AN AVALANCHE. ■_ Times. London, Aug. 10. General Cadorna’s order before the Gorizia fight began, was: “You must march like an impetuous, overwhelming avalanche, nothing stopping you. Avanti, Italia’!’ AN AUSTRIAN REPORT. Rome, Aug. 11. An Austrian communique says Owing to the situation arising out of the evacuation of the bridgehead at Goriiza, the town was given up. After the sanguinary repulse of fresh Italian attacks on the Doherdo Plateau, the required straightening of our line was carried out unhindered. We took prisoner in this region 4100 during the past few days. We were unable to save- six guns when the Italians entered Gorizia bridgehead.

The enemy’s strongest efforts on the 9tb were directed against the Plava sector. Four attacks against Yarycorga and three against the heights eastward of Plava broke against our firm resistance. STAFFS WHICH WERE BURIED. COLLAPSE OF TWO PALACES. Rome, Aug. 10. During the bombardment at Gorizia two palaces occupied by staffs of two Austrian divsional commands, collapsed.
