THE MARKETS.

WOOL SALES. STRONG AMERICAN COMPETITION. j United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received May 8, 10.40 a.m. London, May 7. At the wool sales there is great animation and [strong American competition for ail sorts. GRAIN MARKET. Per Press Association. Christchurch, May 8. The Christchurch grain market is quiet, but firm, owing to slightly improved "prices ruling in Britain. Inflated values in Amercica are fluctuating every day and do not appear to affect prices appreciably in either in Britain or the Colonies. The business passing locally is limited, most holders being unwilling to accept current quotations, which are 3s lid,and 4s. Tuscan and Pearl, and 3s lid'and 3s lOd. Hunt ers. Very little has been placed on offer during the last few days and few sales have been made. Oats are moving off more steadily, but the market is, if anything, slightly weaker, though there is no change in values. The weakness is attributed mainly to the" difficulty of securing shipping, and the shortage of com sacks keeping back threshing. Potatoes are firmer on more inquiry from the North Island, Current prices ranged from 45s to 50s, at country stations. STOCK REPORT.
