NOTES. The attendance was exceptionally large for the opening day of Wanagnui Antnmn Meeting. The track was in good order, but a stretch of sand at the bend near the Recreation Ground was against the chances of some horses, and this was particularly noticeable in the Flying when Longner, who was out in tbe front with Armlet, fell back to sixth, ;and eventually finished seventh in tne race. The horses that were taken on the outside of this loose going all finished well. A noticeable' feature of the day’s racing was that the favourites were beaten. Mr O’Connor, as starter, was in his best form, and the contests were close and exciting, reflecting credit on Handicapper Morse. There were 24 bookmakers present—l2 in the enclosure and 12 outside.

In the opening race—Stewards’ Handicap—Orucinella was weighed out and did her preliminary, but was found to be very sore, and it was decided to take her back to the paddock. Flotilla was caught in the tapes and could not get to her field. Tan San had a bad passage in the early [part of the race, but going round the far bend he moved up fast on the outside, and had the race at his mercy when heads were turned for home.

Overtime and Shannon Lass were the only withdrawals from the Petre Welter, and this left a field of thirteen, and the harrier went op tb a splendid start. Jenkins, on Te Kahurangi, was the first to break the line and led to the turn. Here the Advance colt Courier put in a great run and swept past the field. Mias ([Mischief came with a rattle and the finish was exciting, Courier getting the verdict hy a head. All the acceptors went to the post in the Westmere Hurdle Race, which proved an easy victory for that good little mare, Maidi. Two horses were started from the Porirua stable, and although Exmoor ran prominently in the first mile, he finished behind his field with Wains aria. The Hack Hurdles provided a capital race between the three placed horses Whimper,. Chase Mab, and Tauira. The latter, hard hold, was iu front for a mile, and going round the back struck a hurdle, which lost his chance. Whimper, nicely ridden by the Orofton jockey (N. Campbell) made his effort in the straight, aud won by half a length. The Wanganui Cup was a great race, and the twelve horses were sent away to a beautiful start. The first to break the line was Sir Tristram, with All Red almost abreast after going a quarter of a mile. This pair were in front coming into the straight the first time round. Uhlandu had a slight lead and they raced past the stand, with All Red and Downfall just ahead of the others, who were all bunched, with Kilmarnock in the rear. Six furlongs from home Uhlando chopped across All Red and the latter lost ~some ground, but came on again, followed by Master Delaval. Coming round the bend All Red and Blue Ribbon were together just in front of the others, with Kilmarnock coming fast from the rear. The latter was soon up to the leaders and when once into the straight drew out and won easily. Xylophone was quickest away iu the Juvenile Handicap, and soon had a lead of about three lengths, but he gradually came hack to the field, and was caught and passed before the straight was reached. Here Milan fell, rolling over and over, but fortunately neither jqckey nor horse was hurt. A good race up the straight saw Lady Menschikoff win by half a length. In the Waitoa Hack Race, First Mate took the lead, but was soon passed by Perolina. With about two furlongs to go Anemone came through, followed by Paione. Coming up the straight, Anemone increased her lead, finally winning easily by three lengths, with First Mate four lengths behind Paione. The scratching pen was not used in the Flying. Ballarat was first away, but Armlet soon displaced her, followed by Longner. This order was maintained till the straight was reached, when Ballarat came again, and a great race ensued between Ballarat, Gold Orest and Armlet, the latter dying away at the finish.
