DRAINING OF CLAY LANDS.

A SUGGESTED DRAIN TILE COMPANY. ;

As will be seen by our advertisin cfiramas a meeting is called ft • Saturday next at 3 p.in. in Brict Broad & Co. ’s office, Marton, to dis cuss the formation of a Farmers Co-operative Brick and Tile Oomf pauy. The question of draining |tb| clay lands of this district is on! which is being more and morl strongly forced on the members of our farming community if they wisi to obtain the best possible returs from their land. At present all the tiles used for draining have to be obr tained from Carterton and the heavy railage, added to the big prices asked for the pipes, means i serious item in the working expenses of a farm. We have plenty of suit able clay near to Marton, sample; have been tested and experimented with, and considerable data Eteer gathered by a few people who areV l terested in the matter. It is in4r tended to lay all the information* gathered before the meeting called! for Saturday next, and the question! of forming a farmers’ co-operative company and putting in a plant will be brought up and considered. From the Information gathered seems to bo quite possible to mapufacture all the drain tiles that will* for a long time to come, be needed in the district much more cheaply than they can be imputed. Bricks also are coining to iM a necessary artile in the building trade and there is a wide field to be exploited in them. Some of the clays submitted stood the test well and proved that it will be possible with the proper plant to make glazed sanitary tiles, thus opening another wide field for trade. It is to be hoped chat there will be a representative gathering of farmers at Saturday’s meeting.-
