HOCKEY.

(By “Stick.’’)

Last Wednesday being Prince of Wales’ Birthday, the Marion Hockey Club journeyed to Palmerston to try conclusions 'with the Palmerston North Post Office Club, the former being beaten by 3 goals to nil. The weather was perfect and the ground was in first-class order and very fast, so naturally a very good game eventuated. From the bully off Palmerston broke away headed by their skipper. Grump, and after a good piece of dribbling and dodging were successful in notching Palmerston’s first goal. Play being resumed Marton commenced a dangerous ‘attack, but were cleverly stopped by Sorenson, Palmerston’s half-back. Give and take play followed, chiefly bird hitting by the backs of both teams, until Sta:..T:v 'received a good pass out on bis wing, who passed hotlyfto Crump, in the centre. The hit at goal was spoiled by Outfield nicely, but he lost control of the bail and so gave Crump another attempt at Marton’s goal. Fulton, the goalkeeper, stopping in good style, but by bad luck managed to curl the ball the wrong way, and"by£so doing gave Palmerston their second goal. The scores at this stage of the game were Palmerston 2, Martc-n nil. Marton now shook things up. and carried the play into Palmerston’s territory at 35, but by good defensive play turned defence into attack and an exciting piece of play followed, Palmerston swooping down hotly, but Christensen stopped the rush/ and in doing so was partially disabled, so Swinburne took his place at half-back,’Christen-sen going full back. Palmerston broke away shortly after this and were given a free hit, a Marton player giving a bad stick. From this free hit Minogne passed to Grump, who shot a beautiful clean goal, making Palmerston 3 goals, Marton nil. The visitors now got on their mettle and kept their opponents busy defending and bad very hard luck in not scoring. When the whistle sounded the scores still read Palmerston 3, to the visitor’s nil. On resuming Marton made the second spell very hot and things did get lively, but the forwards made mistakes by hitting too far ahead, their opponents getting the ball every time and clearing their line in grand style; Crump broke away with Stanley to holpTiim ‘and these two passed together very well, and were stopped by the Marton backs, Who were playing a brilliant game. Marton got on a good forward rush by Aitken and McGregor, and carried play into Palmerston’s 25, and ware ; there awhile making things hum, Swinburne having hard luck in not scoring twice. From a corner hit Marton had another shot at goal by McGregor, the ball just going outside the posts. Condition was now beginning to tall the tale and both teams were showing a lot of dash, Marton especially showing plenty of reserve. Palmerston took the ball along from a good hit by Sorensen and had a shot at 'goal, Outfield turning it off in good style. Stanley broke away from the' 25 bully and got into Marlon’s circle, Christensen and McKenzie meeting him and sending the ball up to their forwards. There play remained until the whistle sounded. Neither side added to their score. The Marion team speak in high terms of the hospitality accorded them by Palmerston and consider they are the best of sports. For the winners Crump, Stanley, Minogue, Sorenson, and Kerslake played well, and for the losers Aitken, McGregor, McKenzie, Christensen,- Niool and Outfield were conspicuous. Mr Winston kindly consented to act as- referee and gave universal satisfaction.
