HOCKEY.
* (By “Stick.”) On Wednesday last the opening of the Marton Hockey Club took place on the Park, and being a fine day a large number of players and spectators were present. Sides were picked by the Captain and Yice-Captain of the Club, and a [good, hard, and enjoyable game eventuated, the former side winning by 5 goals to 4. The ground was in good order. Both ' teams showed fine form and were very evenly matched as the scores indicate. The passing and combination of the players was excellent and if the members learn to keep up such good play the club should give a good account of themselves this season. One thing I noticed, viz., that the whistle sounded a little too often for “Sticks.” Players must learn to avoid this breach of the rules and keep their sticks down —too much whistle spoils a good game and makes it very uninteresting, also learn to keep in their places. One or two I noticed were at fault in this respect. However, taken right through the game was very interesting to watch and one could not help ■ noticing a marked improvement on last season’s play and at times some excellent stick work was exhibited. For the winners Russell, Scrymgeoar, Temperley, Mclncloe, Signall, Dowell and "Wilson played well. For the losers D. Smith, McGregor, Aitken, Parkinson, Christiansen, Outfield. Mr Carey acted as referee and gave every satisfaction.
