UPPER WANGAEHU ROAD DISTRICT.

A meeting of settlers and ratepayers of the Upper Wangaehu Road Board district and others interested in the proposed alterations of boundaries took place at Mataroa on Saturday afternoon. There were about thirty persons present, including four members of the. Board —Messrs H. Oollis, W. Strachan, W. Williams and J. Bremner. Mr Collier, chairman, moved, and Mr R. Bremner seconded a motion that the present road districts be not altered, but an amendment was carried by 13 to 9 that the western portion be handed over to Rangitikei County Council. Subsequently Mr Laidley, on-be-half of the Wainui settlers, moved that a portion of the road district, of which he defined the boundaries, should be added to the Rangitikei County. This was carried on a show of hands. The area recommended for inclusion by Mr Laidley was a portion of that referred to in the amendment, and it seems curious that the chairman should have allowed such a motion to be put to the meeting. The result of the two motions being passed produces a hopeless state of muddle, from which settlers will have to extricate themselves before either Wanganui or Rangitikei County Councils will take action.
