Mr Sanderson, of the White Star Company, testified to the Royal Commission that the shipping ring’s preferential rates on American goods shipped from New York to Australia via Liverpool were due to the fact that different interests .were mutually fighting in the direct service between New York and Australia, and were unable to. come to an agreement. A strong point in the shippers’ favour was the tendency to increase the size of vessels, and rates were gradually lowered in order to draw cargoes from sailing vessels. '
