THE PREISER’S ADVENTURES.
STUCK IN THE MUD. YET SINGS CHEEKILY. Per Press Association. Auckland, March 6. On the way from Waipn to Mauugatoroto the Premier, Lady Ward and party, in a motor car encountered a thunderstorm and the trip which should have been accomplished in 45 minutes occupied 1% hours. The road was so greasy that the wheels would not grip and it was soon a case of all hands out and push. Occasionally the car skidded perilously near the edge of the ravine. The party was, however, a hearty one and the Premier cheerily sang "snatches of songs and Lady Ward seemed thoroughly to enjoy the novel experience. Nearing Wellsford darkness having set in and the road being bad for the last ten miles there was slow progress, and frequent dismounting, to keep the car moving. In one very soft spot the car wheels sank and it seemed that the party had settled for the night, but the car was eventually extricated. The district engineer who had ridden five miles to meet the Premier’s party guided them safely to Wellsford, arriving at 10.30 p.m. The Premier was unable to speak at Helensville.
