FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J, B. Trewin) in the chair, and Ors. Cobbe, Tolly, West, Daf-' ragh, Fitzherbert, Atkinson, GobdbC : - - here, Bramweli and Richmond. The application of the Technical School committee that the footpath in front of the new building should be asphalted was granted. It. was decided to inform W. Dalton that the footpath improvement he asked for would form part of the loan proposals. Messrs Prior & Gillespie wrote; stating that some of the owners of property abutting on Maoartbur street refused to contribute ■to the cost of the work required as in their opinion the road had been taken over ,bj the Council*—Or. . Tolly gave notice of motion that improvements to this street be included in the loan proposals. The Engineer in reporting on his plan of the proposed ‘North Street drain, stated that its centre line would be 30 feet from the north fence. He noticed that the two creeks crossing the road $ contributed largely to the flood on Dominion*Day, therefore he proposed to cut them off. The work he had sketched out by open cut would cost £SOO. He had also gone into the question of using Monier pipes and reinforced concrete. By pipes the work would cost £3048, and in concrete work £3IBB. Or, Goodbehere said it would not be wise to make an open cut seven feet wide and four feet deep along a street. It would not only reduce the value of the’ frontage along this road, but would be a constant source of danger, especially during flood ■ time, Council-liable *6 serious costs for damages. He believed also that a scour would bo set up in the loose gravel locality. The matter was referred to the consideration of a special meeting of the Works Committee on Thursday next. It was resolved on the motion of Or. Fitzherbert “That, it be an instruction to the delegates represent- _ ihg the Council on the Rivers Conference to vote in favor of the proposal to be submitted at the next meeting of the Conference by the committee of the said Conference, namely,"that the Government be requested fro appoint a Royal Commission to consider the whole matter, and report, such report to be referred to the Conference before itsproposals are embodied in legislation. It was resolved to hold a special meeting on Thursday next to consider a by-law to deal with traction engine traffic. The sum of £5 was voted towards the cost of the Rivers Conference. . The tender of Pulling & Lord for work required on North road was £sl 6s Bd, and that of J. Shapleski . £67 7s. The tender cf Pulling & Lord was accepted. The tender [of Shepherd Bros, for chaff at £5 10s per ton, oats 3s 6d per bushel and crushed oats lls per . sack was accepted. It was decided to make formal application to Government for a loan of £17,750 for street improvement and drainage works and £2350 to a private firm.
