r Tho usual monthly meeting Was hell last evening. There were present—Messrs F. Piraui (chairman), E. Dixon, F. Purnell, J. Smith, F. M. Spurdlo, A. Fraser, G. H. Bennett, W. O. Cargill, and D. H. Gpthrio. Tho appointment of Mr L. J. Fnrrio was confirmed. With regard to Unworn appointment, it was resolved to ask the Hawera Committee to select from tho names, or tho Board would make selection itself. Tho P’ollowiug resignations were accepted:—A. L. Watts, Kimbolton; E. N. Fitness, Eltham; W. H. Hutchinson, Whakamara; W. H. Amos, Feildiug.'.' Leave of absence was granted to A. Squire (two weeks), E. H. Walters (two weeks), H. F. Gabites (ten days), J. Galland (one week), E. J. Graham (one week), K. Montgomery (one week), E. lI.'B. Lynch (two weeks), M. Mausou (live weeks), M. ICarmody (two fweeks), M. Aris (three weeks), T. O, Adams and J. Browning (extra week). Correspondence ; —From Education Department re grants for Auroa, Glen Oroua, Greatford, and Taoroa : received. Discontinuance cf house allowance at Opaku; letter to bo written to tl.o Minister, Instruction for No. 2 Battalion and target practice ; received. Grant for Ohakune ; Work to bo done. Refusal of grant for Queen’s Park School; received. Consent to exchange of section at Main South road; received. Disclaiming liability of drainage; received.
Re the drainage Of the Eltham Campbell street, and Feildiug schools left to the Building Committee. From architect, re ventilation of Marton D.H.S.—Referred to the Building Committee. From Wanganui School Committtoo, asking the Board to reduce school hours so that religious instruction may bo given for half an hour each week.—The Chairman pointed out that this would bo illegal.—Mr Fraser moved, and it was resolved, that the committee bo informed that the Board cannot couKout to any reduction of tho school hours; in contravention of tho regulations. From Bulls Committee asking tho Board to establish a secondary department at the Bulls school. —Resolved to inform the Committee that application has already been made. It was reported that Campbell Street and Terrace End (Palmerston North) schools bad been closed for four half days on the occasion of tho Palmerston Show, instead of two half days, as authorised by tho Board.—it was resolved, on the motion of tho Chairman, that tho attention of tho headmasters ot Campbell Street and College Street Schools bo called to the fact that the schools had been closed without tho consent of the Board, and in defiance of the regulations, and that if this sort of thing occurred again the salaries of the teachers would bo deducted on the days on which they absent themselves without leave. From Mr C.' G. Baynes re subsidy for the Kimbolton Swimming Bath. He pointed out that £IBO 1-ls, had been spent on tho baths. The secretary was instructed to inform Mr Baynes as to the steps necessary to be taken to procure a subsidy. From Marton Committee re grant for gate at headmaster’s residence. —Received
It was resolved — To grant £ for £ for fencing at Kimbolton.
That £ for £ bo granted for metalling ground and repairing fences. That application from Buuuythorpo for now desks and maps bo referred to Building Committee. That applications for grants for school libraries at Cheltenham and Hnutorvillo be hold over.
That question of enlarging residence at Huuterviilo bo referred to the Building Committee. To inform Martou Com mittee that the Board is awaiting further information re miniature rifle range. To establish sciiool at Karetu Junction, and send some school furniture from Pukoroa. Applications for drainage wore received from Poildiug, Eltham, and Campbell street (Palmerston North). —A groat deal of discussion took place, and eventually it was resolved tht the matter be referred to the Building Committee, with power to act.—Mr Purnell moved as a further amendment that the Borough Councils in the different towns affected bo asked to allow their engineers to draw up the plans and spool float-ions. This the Chairman refused to admit, on the ground that it was not an amendment. Mr Eraser was instructed to make arrangements for letting the old residence at Foxton. Resolved, that the next meeting bo hold at 9 a.m. on Thursday, 12th December. It was resolved that the January meeting be held no the 20th of that mouth.
