HORSESHOE DRAINAGE BOARD

The first meeting of the newly elected trustees of the above Hoard was held yesterday afternoon. .Present : Messrs Mudford, Thompson, Hunt, Low. and Dalton. Mr H. H. Hunt, who was reelected chairman, in returning thanks, said with his previous experience and the assistance of the members lie hoped that he would ho able to carry out the duties of the position, but he was afraid there wercjsouie difficulties ahead of them in regard "to threatened legal actions. One was by Mr Hopping, who, however, had not clearly defined his complaint, but ho (the chairman) thought that Mr Hopping wished the commencement of the Mam Drain deepened. The trouble was ' there was not fall enough in the Main Drain. ■ Mr Dalton said there was plenty ot fall in the creek, and the principal ' object of the proposed amalgamation Was to deepen the creek. The Chairman said it would he money well spent to widen the Main Drain, but at present there was not the necessary engineering advice available f or the work, and ho thought it would be advisable for the Board to employ an engineer to lay off the work needed there ; but in regard to tiro other drains, the ; services of an. overseer would suffice, ■' as hitherto, in r e g arc f to the amalgamation, that had p POu practically agreed upon It had been agreed that there should h 0 seven wards, and these had been defined. ? would be necessary to deepen the Main Drain to its month; that was, to go 50 chains into tho lower district. He thought, however, that the amalgamation would go forward all right; it would have to go. It was resolved that Mr Armstrong bo engaged to take levels of tho Sluggish Creek up to Jones’ Line, and give an estimate of the cost of improving the Main Drain up to Mr Hopping’s property. It was decided to invite applications for an overseer for the Board, to be in by the 20th of the next month. It was resolved that the Sluggish Creek Drainage Board be asked to meet the Horseshoe Drainage Board to decide on amalgamation. Mr Low asked whether he could compel tho land owner below to clean out the drains necessary to give him a proper outlet. It was thought lie would have to go before a Court and show damage before the other land owners could be compelled to take action.
