SANSON NOTES.

From OurlOwu Correspondent

A meeting of our School Committee was held on Monday, 18th iust. Present: J. H. Perrett (chairman), W. Brookie, W. J. Phillips, J. McDoneil, and J. Anderson, secretary. The headmaster’s report showed that the attendance was improving; it also asked tho committee to fix a date for the concert. It was resolved that, the concert he held on Friday, December 6th and the secretary was instructed to procure 300 tickets. It was also resolved to give two prizes in each class for best attendance. The committee decided to give the children the usual trip on the school breaking up for the summer holidays, and tho secretary was instructed to write to Mr H. Hammond, Oroua Downs, asking permission to use his grounds. A part of the sciiool grounds has been ploughed with tho object of putting it down in grass and also a portion for school garden. It was resolved to sow tho grass Jas 'soon as possible and to plough the remainder of paddock nest year. Our vocal and orchestral society continues to progress. Members attend in good numbers to practice and are improving rapidly. It is intended to give a concert at an early date. The flue weather that we are getting has greatly improved the appearance of the district. Grass is growing well and stock generally have greatly improved in appearance. It is very hard to say what the crops will be like as everything depends on the weather. The early crops will be very light, but at present the late crops are looking very well and given a few showers will, I think, be better than the early ones. There is still some barley being sown but this can be sown much laker than oats with every “chance of getting fair crop. . , , . The following is taken from the report concerning the agricultural classes and experiments carried on at the Stratford District High School and will, lam sure, prove of interest to farmers .-—Farmer’s plots—The ground was of very poor quality indeed. Experiments in growing turnips, and mangolds were carried out. The treatment as recommended by Mr Aston, chemist, to the Agricultural Department was adopted. In growing turnips experiments were made with superphosphates, superphosphates and basic slag, bonedust and superphosphate, bonedust, superphosphates and kainit, and special (turnip manure. The section on which no manure was used raised a crop of four tons 13 owt to tho acre, and tho manured grounds showed a remarkable increase at little cost. One and’a half cwt of superphosphates per acre increased the crop to 23 tons 13 cwt, at a cost of 8s 3d per aero for fertiliser; 1)4 cwt each of superphosphates and basic slag 25 tons 6 cwt at 15s per aero; % cwt bonedust and 3 owt superphosphate, 37 tons 9 cwt at 16s 3d per acre: % cwt bonedust 3 cwt superphosphates and )4 cwt kainit, 38 tons 5 cwt at 18s 9d |per acre; special turnip manure 3 owt, 37 tons 5 cwt at £1 2s 6d per acre. Tho experiments having been carried out on poor land gives a clear idea of the comparative values of tho manures used. The crop of mangolds w»s planted late and was a comparative failure. With carrots tho best result was obtained from superphosphates aud bonedust, tho crop weighing 14 tons 11 cwt 2 qrs. 331bs to tho acre.
