Press Association. Auckland. October 8. The local Y.MO.A. building campaign was continued to-day and resulted in the satisfactory total of £1455 8s 6d being received. Of this £2OO was contributed by the Hon. Mr Mitclielson, £2OO by Mr ,J. J. Craig, £IOO by Mr J. W. Stewart, and £SO each by Dr McDowell and Mr W. B. Leyland. This, with this £3,787 raised on tho first day, brings the total subscribed tor the new building up to £5,242 8s Gd. With tho £4,000 estimated to be received in connection with tho disposal of tlie present building after paying the rhbrtgage; the total thus comes to £9,242 Ss fid. Dunedin, October 8. The East Taieri school, situated near Mosgiel, was totally destroyed by fire at midday to-day. Th© fir© was caused by a small boy lighting a match land dropping it under the weather boards amongst some old birds’ nests. Welx.ington, October 8. A conference of delegates from the various Fire Boards met bore to-day (the Mayor of Palmerston North being one) to consider the Fire Brigades Amendment Bill. The principal recommendations of the conference, which will be embolied in a letter to tho AttorneyGeneral, are that there should he larger contribution by the Government and that general amendments should he made regarding the position of Fire Boards in respect to property, land, buildings and plant belonging to the several local bodies. Tho conference, whose proceedings were conducted in camera, waited upon the Statutes Revision Committee and submitted its views regarding the measure.
