THE TURAKINA FIRE.
(Per Press Association.' ■Wellington, October 8. Pumping was continued on board the Tnrakiua to-day. The pumps were unworkable in No. 1 hold owing to the large quantity of rubbish choking the valves. Attention wad confined to No. 3 hold, into whiclj No. 1 drains. Pumping is continued at intervals in the engine room, inf. to which the water from the three foreholds has drained. The water is now well down. The Tnrakina is now afloat but she still has a list to port. To-mor-row she will he removed from her present berth to the Glasgow wharf. The rabbits (some 2000 cases) will bo turned into manure _ The beef aud mutton will be boiled down. The butter will be sold in the interests of those concerned. The Stormbird is loading damaged wool for Napier. The extent of the fire in'the forehold is only becoming more apparent as the men get lower. The origin of the fire Was at first thought to be among the flax in the ’tween decks, hat it now seems to have been much deeper down, for the destruction, now that tho bottom bales are almost in sight, lias boon as thorough in this portion of the compartment as any other.
