The Chronicle publishes a letter written by Ben Tillett from Melbourne to a friend in England in which he states that it is unwise for anyone to think of making a home in Australia, where the people grovel in the throes of poverty, “ Though Nature is prodigal iu her gifts,” he says “yet sweating, unemployment and starvation rule with a rod that breaks hearts and lives. Monopoly is Czar, laud is monopolised, gravest scandals occur iri the administration of Government land and scores of thousands are unable to obtain land.”
