NIGHTCAPS’ ENQUIRY.
Per Press Association. Invercargill, September 13. At the Nightcaps Commission, Deputy Dixon recalled admitted that once before the temporary stoppings were put up he had to be carried away from the fire where he had been pouring water and was overcome by gases, that was about 2 months before the disaster, Mackie and Lloyd carried him away. James Somerville, who after eleven years in the service of Nightcaps Company had left and become a farmer since the lire, said that on the night shift he had once called Frame out about 2 months before the disaster because the smoke and fire were bad. Later Frame told him not to call him again. On that occasion tbe fan was started and the smoke cleared away and the fire got under. Witness and a boy named Brizier were troubled by the smoke every night. Several times they felt overcome by something in the mine and nearly always had a headache on- the night shift and frequently vomited.
