HORSESHOE DRAINAGE BOARD

A meeting of the Trustees was hold yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs Hunt (chairman), Thompson and Dalton. Before proceeding with the ordinary business the chairman reminded the members tiiat the Board was short of one of its number by tho death of the lato lion. W. w. Johnston, a member who had, in a high degree, tho esteem and regard of the other members. On the motion of tho chairman it was decided to send a letter of condolence to Mrs Johnston, with an expression of the sympathy of tho Board in her loss.

A letter was received from the Valuation Department, stating that the district had been making satis-

factory progress as shown by tiie increased valuation, from £230,289 to £237,533. Tho chairman said the increased valuation, having been made by tho Department itself, was hardly proof of progress.

Tho annual balance sheet, which was presented, showed tho receipts by way of rates, to have been '£4B3 0s 3d, which with a credit balance of £U>7 Os 2d, made a total of £OSO

12s od. Tho sum of £339 6s 3d was spent on drainage work, £IOO was paid to tho Sluggish River Drainage Board (tho Horseshoe Board’s share of the maintenance of the main drain), £95 1,2 s Gd to tho same Board under judgment, the legal expenses in the case having been £?8 4s Cd,

the credit balance was £l3l 6s, the remainder of tho expenditure being chiefly working expenses.

It was resolved to strike the same rate as last year, namely %A on first class laud, pjd on second and %d on third class laud.

Tiie chairman reported that there had been a meeting of the two boards on tiie matter of amalgamation and it had bc.en decided to have tiie several drainage areas in the two Board districts defined; that being done tiie ratepayers would he asked by way of petition to approve the proposed amalgamation. The sura of £93 13s 2d was passed for payment to the Sluggish River Drainage Board, being proportion of cost of maintaining the main drain.

Referring again to the question of amalgamation the chairman said progress was not being made with the drainage map that ought "have been. ■ ; ■
