ftlarton i.C. Meeting
September 4 and s.—Marten J.O. Meeting. September IS and 19.—Rangitikei Spring Meeting.
The weather was anything hnt satisfactory for the opening day of the above mooting. After several davs wot weather the morning broke line but rain again set in during the afternoon and three races were run in a heavy downpour. Those adverse conditions interfered somewhat with the success of the meeting and the state of the enclosures was anything but pleasant for the public. However, it is satisfactory ito note that despite these circumstances the general receipts for the first day nioi‘o than favourably compare with the corresponding day last year. With lino weather there is little doubt that the club would
have had a. record meeting. Visitors present wore pleased with the manner iu which the business was conducted., The meeting was certainly Woll-ofticored and controlled and was free from accident or blemish of any kind. In most cases the races wore decided by good fields and Mr Morse, the llaiidicappor, succeeded iu gnagiug the merits of the majority of horses well enough to produce first class racing. Of the racing itself little can bo said. For the most part it was exceptionally good, some of the finishes provoking great excitement. Two of the events wore won iii tho Itisfe fow strides ixud the judge’s office was by no means a sinecure. In tho Oroftou, Handicap soma of the supporters of Waikaraka claimed that their horse won hut tho judge’s, Mr R. H. Aldworth s, verdict was a head iu favour of i risco. Waikaraka finished iu tho middle at the track and this would probably give the public that impression. An unpleasant incident occurred in coni' ucction with this race which resulted iu tho rider, of Waikaraka, O. Jenkins, being brought before tuc stewards for improper conduct towards the judge. . After careful inquiry ho was fined £5 and requested to tender an apology to tho judge. Tho newly-appointed secretary, Mr Arthur Way, showed that ho had a thorough grasp of tho duties appertaining to the position. Ho assumed active control of the gathering and was ably supported by officers m charge of departments of whom Messrs T. T. Watt, clerk of scales, and F. Young, assistant; P. J. S hidden, totailsator steward; E. Broad, result hoard steward; W. L. Little, timekopeer; and R. Mcludoo, cPrk of course, were conspicuously energetic. The starting of Mr Jus. Ooombe left no room for complaint. The stewards are to ho complimented on tho wav they looked afte* the meeting. The catering was in capable hands—Mr Nicol providing a capital lunch, and Mr Oroshy, of Awahuri, satisfied his patrons at tho publican’s booth. Mamou Band played an excellent programme of music.
