DISTRICT COURT.

Psr Press Association. Pahiatua, August 22. . At a sitting of the District Court, before District Judge Haselden, the case Alice Elizabeth White v. 'Margaret Britland, was heard before a jury. Plaintiff claimed £BO foxslanderous statements alleged to have been made by defendant, or defendant's daughter, concerning plaintiff. Judgment was given for pla-itt-tiff for £25 and costs £u 2s.

In Branuigan v. Macdonnld, plaintiff claimed £250 for alleged libel printed in the Pahiatua Herald, containing statements made concerning evidence given : by plaintiff in a case heard in the Magistrate's Court at Pahiatua., of McDermott v. Macdouald. Mr Smith appeared for plaintiff and Mr Herdman for defendant. Ihe case was heard before a jury. After hearing evidence and argument of counsel, his Houour said in his opinion that taking the whole article together the words used wore not fairly capable of defamatory meaning, and ho withdrew the case from the jury. Plaintiff was nonsuited, with costs. Plaintiff's counsel gave notice of appeal. His Honour fixed security for appeal at £3O exclusive of costs.
