Death of Euroclydon
About a week ago Mr J. McCully arrived in Palmerston North from Oamaru with the well known aire Euroclydon who was to be at the service of breeders in this district during the forthcoming season. The horse was quartered at Mr Jones' stable in David-street. Early on Saturday morning the groom in charge had reason to believe that a horse had been cast in one of the loose-boxes. Upon closer examination Euroclydon was found to be down and unable to rise. Assistance was obtained and Euroclydon was got on his feet again. It was not then thought that any serious injuries had been caused to the horse and he was put in an adjacent paddock for- awhile. Serious developments'; however ensued later and Euroclydon was brought back to the stable. Mr G. E. Owen, M.R.C.V.S., was summoned and decided to operate, but as soon as he did so, discovered the horse's condition to be practically a hopeless one, he having evidently twisted his intestines through being cast in his box, and he succumbed a little after noon. Euroclydon was a fine commanding looking chestnut horse 16s hands high and was by Gorton—Lady Gertrude. He came vejy prominently under notice on the New' Zealand turf when, as a three-year-old, in 1895, he won the triple crown of the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups and C.J.C. Derby, while the following year, with 9.5 on his back, he acted as runner up to Lady Zetland in the N.Z. Cup. Euroclydon at the time of his death was 15 years old, and the loss "to- his owner, Mr McCully, is a very severe one. Whether his loss is minimised by insurance or not, we have been unable to ascertain. ;
