COURTS.
. Per Tress Association. Auckland, August 8. The criminal sessions of Auckland Supremo Court were continued before Mr Justice Donniston to-day. A charge of having attempted to steal sheep belonging to 11. 0. Glass, of .Broadwood, near Kau-eue, on April 2Gth last, was preferred against James George Ferguson, a respectably dressed man of about 35 or ■lO \; cars, who pleaded not guilty. Accused owned property on the opposite side of road to prosecutor. Accused on oath slated that that he possessed close on 2000 acres of land in the Hokianga district, most of which was freehold. On his section adjoining’Mr Glass’ property at Broadwood he had some GO sheep and a similar number of cattle. To Mr Tole he denied the charge that ho was convicted 20 years ago for stealing a pig and that ho had also been convicted for assault.
His Honor, having summed up, the jury returned half an hour later with a verdict of guilty. Constable Boasly stated that accused bore a very bad character in the district. His Honor passed a sentence of two years’ hard labor.
David Remnant was arraigned upon a charge of committing a serious offence upon a young girl under 10 years at Hamilton ou July 23 last. Prisoner said lie wished to ask for an adjournment as his wife was ill in hospital and was unable to attend ;he wanted her as a witness. The case was -adjourned until to-morrow.
