MANGAWEKA.
From Our Own Correspondent. The first annual ball in connection with the local tennis club was a great success. The hall and stage were beautifully decorated with flax and other evergreens, mingled with numerous flags of all nations. Mr Della, the secretary, and the committee ought to feel proud of the success of the ball both financially and socially. After a fortnight of continuous hard white frosts tho weather has broken up and to-day woke up with , a glorious spring morning. The cold ground which has lain hare through tho winter is being turned over aud worked ready for seeds, plants, etc. Everybody is busy with their little patch to bring forth something. 1 Tho news of tho great sculling ! match between Webb aud Towns was l received boro about seven o’clock on 1 Saturday evening with cheering aud hand shakos. Truly it was a groat j win for Now Zealand. j Tho funeral of the late James j Peacock, who was killed at Ohakune * last week, was a lengthy one. Many expressions of sympathy were extended to tho bereaved family. We also tender our sympathy to Mr Adso, late of Mangawcka, who lost his youngest child last week through a severe attack of croup. Tho Anglican Church in Manga- j weka have secured a splendid hell, which is to ho erected at once. Tins will, no doubt, prove a great couvou ieuco to tho congregation.
