August 13, 15 aud 17. —C.J.O. Grand . National. September 4 and 5. Marton J.Y. Meeting. ~ . September 18 and 19.—Bangitiuci Spring Meeting. Australiaii Bolting-

Tor Press Association.—Copyright

MtiUBOUBNE, August 2There is little change in the betting for the National Hurdles, and Bribery maintains bis position ns favorite.

Goodwood Cup. London, August A Tuo Goodwood Cup resulted: —White Knight 1, Madame Soubiso 2, Malua 3. Notes by “Turf.” Whilst schooling Katoa ou tho Marton course cu Wednesday morning Claude Whale had tho misfor-

tune to split his collar-bone through his mount: coming to grief over a feuco. It appears that Katoa took oft' too far away from the jump, laudiug ou the fence over which ho tooplcd, injuring one of his forelegs, which will necessitate his retirement. Tho chestnut gelding was doing good work, aud would have been seen out at the early spring meetings but for this accident. A number of horses arc being prepared iu Marton iu view of the Hunt Cup, including Columbine, Aesop, Seuorita, Lifebuoy, Tho \ agraut, Whipcord aud Pilot. . Owners aud trainers, who intend nominating for the opening meetings of tho 1907-8 season, should register their charges with the Secretary of tho Conference in time for their names to appear in tho official calendar, otherwise they are liable to a fine of 2s (id when registering with soerevaries of clubs. A visitor to tho Marton racecourse this week was agreeably surprised at the couditou of the racing track, and considered it is ou a par with tho best iu this island. It is iu excellent order aud tho same remark applies to

tho plough track. The Wanganui Metropolitan Committee meet next Wednesday, when licenses for tho 1907-8 scasoh will be considered for this district. Achilles’ withdrawal from tho Now Zealand Cup will not .mean a heavy loss to hackers, as tho short prices ruling about any horse with a chance of success are not couducive to speculation. T. Lloyd, at tho Croftou Stables, is having a busy time of it in view of tho forthcoming meetings, the whole of his boxes being occupied. Phaetonitis and Lull is a likely winning double at the Grand National Meeting, whilst Pafitutn, Morriwai aud Cniraguo arc a trio that may be seen to advantage iu tho Grand National Hurdles. A. Julian will ride Slow Tom in tho Grand National Steeplechase aud W. Higgins will have the mount ou Phaetonitis, on whom he was suc-

ccssful in last year’s race. Paritntu lias arrived at Riccartou. An oiler of £OOO was refused for tho Castor gelding at 'Wellington. I have to acknowledge the receipt of J. J. Miller’s Sporting Pamphlet, which contains up-to-date information of all kinds of sport in Australasia, with a long list of records of every branch of sport. Tho publication is well worthy of perusal. , , _ ■ A sad accident happened in Queensland recently. A mare called. Dolores, who had won the Trial Stakes an hour or two earlier, when subsequently contesting another race, ran full butt into a tree, and killed ■herself and her rider, 0. Griffon, on the spot. Uranium has boon acquitting herself well in her schooling over hurdles. Uranium is amongst tho acceptors for the Grand .National Hurdle Raco.

In opening his article on the English Derby, the Special Commissioner of the Sportsman wrote -“In the highly improbable event of Ireland being allowed to cut adrift from the British Empire there is, I think, no doubt that Mr Croker. the owner of Orby, if still inclined for politics, would bo elected the first President of the Irish Republic. ’ ’ At Ellcrslio on Saturday morning Loch Fync, Irish and Yizicr were sent once round tho steeplechase course, the trip extending over tho hill. Loch Fync, who completed the full round, came home by himself, the other pair being eased up at the head of tho straight. Aqua Regia was schooled over hurdles, the Salvadau mare acq fitting herself satisfactorily. During Derby and Ascot Cup week tho New Zealand jockey Hewitt had very few mounts, but rode four winners and two seconds, among his wins being tne Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot on Laily. When the last mail left England Ormc was at the head of the winning sires’ list, with £11,253. Small figures truly, whin compared with the sum, £58,1525. won by descendants of St. Simon in 1900.

The name of grand old Trenton is being kept to the fore in England this year. His son Tor-point won two of the best long distance races at Ascot, and Cuffs, who is doing so well, is out of a Trenton mare. No loss than four residents of Mastortou were fortunate enough to receive the £ll3 11s dividend on the Wellington double of Saturday last. The Lethe gelding Narcotic is to bo schooled over hurdles. He should bo a natural jumper, and as ho possesses a good turn of speed, should prove useful over the obstacles. A remarkable operation was, says an Australian writer, recently performed on Isaac Earushaw —perhaps one of the host known Australian trainers of the present day—an operation which saved his life. Ho was suffering from a growth in the throat, which the doctors deemed advisable to remove. They ope;.' throat whileEarushaw way the influence' of 'an anaestlun
