FRESH TROUBLE IN MOROCCO.
Massacre of Europeans. | Press Association—Copyright. : Tangier, August 1. Dr Meuli, a Frenchman from Casablanca, who has reached Tangier, states that many natives who entered on the pretext of selling corn assembled near the harbour and insulted and killed the native guards. Thereupon some armed European workmen appeared but were instantly assailed and massacred. The captain of a German ship states that the outbreak was due to the Governor not taking precautions. The German ship brought to Tangier a
large number of Jewish refugees from Casablanca. They disclose that three tribes, angered at the new control of the customs and the progress of the harbour and tramway works, entered Casablanca, uttering threats to massacre all foreigners. A man, claiming to have been an eye witness, declares that the tribes entered and proclaimed a holy war. Five Frenchmen, including a fireman and a foreman, named respectively Rota and Masse, employed on the harbour works,
two Italians and a Spaniard were killed by the natives who then pillaged the European shops. The refugees escaped by bribing the soldiers guarding the harbour and town gates. A later message states that the massacre occurred at noon. The natives are announcing that the tribes are about to enter and massacre French workmen. They attacked the Frenchmen with clubs and knives and burned their corpses. It was eight in the evening before the fugitives were able to leave town. M. Neuville, the French Consul, remained at his post. Pabis, August 1. The cruiser Galilee has proceeded tc Casablanca.
