Dr Springthorpe, one of the official visitors of the Metropolitan Lunatic Asylums, makes some serious allegations with regard to overcrowding and want of proper caro and treatment of patients. He found 30 poor feeble patients at Tarra Bend without a fire although the temperature was down to 48 degrees, on the ground that fire places were unsafe.
