NAUTICAL INQUIRY.
Pressl Association, Auckland, July 6. The nautical inquiry into the collision between tho Tavinui and the Pendle Hill commeucdo to-day. McArthur, mate of the Pendle Hill, stated that his vessel was riding at anchor iu a calm, clear, moonlight nigiit, and tho Tavinui, which was coming up midcliaunol, came iu and suddenly steered across his bows, carrying away the jibboom. Lindsay, the captain of the Tavinui, came aboard later, and iu reply to a question as to what was wrong with him, his second effleer said Captain Lindsay suffered from dysentery all the way from the Islands, and had been taking clilorodyno. It appeared to witness that Lindsay was off Ills head through drink, ‘or drugs, or that he was ill. Lindsay stated iu Court that bo did not blame the barque in any way. Tho colliison was due to an (error in judgment on bis part. The officers and crew of the Pendle Hill were accordingly released from attendance. In the box Lindsay was partially examined, but owing to bis being ill his evidence was postponed and the inquiry was adjourned till Saturday, vyhen tho Tayiuui will return from West? port,
