JERSEY BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting ’of the above was held at the Showgrounds yesterday, Mr Harkness presiding.Six new members were elected.

The balance-sheet showed a credit of £24 16s the receipts being £B4 5s and the total' expenditure £ll3 12s lOd. The liabilities amounted to £32 on account of the forthcoming volume of the Herd Book, leaving a surplus of £lOl 18s 4d.

Mr Harkness, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratulated the Association on the successful position. He trusted that the good results so far maintained would still continue to flourish and that a good deal more useful work would still be accomplished. In referring to the remarks of the Hon. Mr McNab, bo hoped that in the establishment of pure-bred herds the Minister would not overlook the claims of tho Jersey breed and ho urged upon the Association to forcibly bring this under the notice of the Government. Mr Griffiths endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and hoped that the lines as suggested by the chairman - v would be followed out, as the Jersey must be looked upon ns the most profitable cow in the dairying industry. He suggested that if the meeting had been called earlier in the week therO might have been a better attendance, and hoped that this would be altered for next year. l The balance-sheet was then adopted.

Officers as follows were elected: Patron, Mr P. Hunter; president, Mr J. Harkness ; vice-president, Mr E. Griffiths; council, Messrs A. Buchanan and W. H. Booth ; auditors, Messrs Eutherfurd and O’Connell. Mr Harkness urged that provincial advisory committees be set up, as it was impossible to do justice all over the place without knowing the local conditions. It was decided “That this meeting approves of the constitution of provincial committees and that the council be authorised to define districts and to draft regulations for the working of such committees.

Mr Buchanan moved that all members of the Association who had won at least three championships at the leading shows of the colony during the past seven years, should he eligible for inclusion in the list of judges competent to act at A. and P. shows. An amendment was moved that the Association draw up a list of members who were considered capable to act as judges and that copies he sant to various Associations. The motion was withdrawn in favour of the amendment and it was decided that the newly constituted committees be asked to suggest eligible judges in their respective districts. It was resolved to hold the next annual meeting on the Friday morning of next Winter Show. It was decided to support the action taken by Canterbury in regard to the bolding of Koyal Agricultural Shows at Christchurch and Palmerston on alternate competitions be established so as to demonstrate what could be done by the various breeds, especially the Jersey, and that the Government be asked to take the matter in hand and institute such competitions. —Carried. Mr Griffiths said that in regard to registration in the Herd Book a considerable time elapsed between the volumes. Mr Watson stated that in future the volumes would bo published annually. Mr Buchanan moved that a double fee be imposed on the registration of unreigstered cattle over three years old on June 30th of this year. —Carried. Mr Watson moved that the Association suggest to the Minister of Agriculture that in establishing his proposed model dairy herds, the Jersey should be given a chance to show its superiority over all other breeds.—Carried. A very hearty vote of thanks was recorded to Mr Harkness for his donation of two guineas in connection with the recent Exhibition Show, and also for his valuable services rendered to the Association. _ , Mr Watson, the editor of the Herd Book, was also accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the excellent work which he had done.
