SUGAR IN LEATHER.
A Customs Contention

The Customs officials in London stopped large parcels of Australian leather because the export certificates showed they contained glucose sugar, analysis showing that most of the sides contained about 7 per cent, of sugar and one side 22 per cent., on which the Customs officials are claiming duty, thus delaying delivery to the consignees. It is considered that export certificates are unnecessary, as they are not used for American or Argentine leather, which contain sugar, but enter free.
Mr Coghlan has written to the Customs asking for the same treatment for all imported leathers,
