THE SPRECKELS’ LINE.

Alleged Japanese Option. Press Association. Wellington, January 9. A statement made by the New York correspondent of the Melbourne Age that the Japanese hare the option of purchase of nine of the line of San Francisco steamers, and that they will ultimately gain possession of the line, was brought under the notice of the Premier. Sir Joseph Ward said he was rather inclined to doubt the accuracy of the statement, but; considered the matter of sufficient importance to institute inquiries as to the truth of the statement from Mr Spreckels agent at Auckland,

In reply to the Premier, the New Zealand agent of the Spreckels Company telegraphs that there is absolutely no foundation for the statement that Spreckels have sold their interest ! the Oceanic Co. to the Japanese.
