BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING.

The ordinary meeting of the Boritgh Council was held on Wednesday vening, when there were present: Lhe Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawrie), Crs. P. Daysh, R. H. McGough, F. J.

•icrrow, D. R. Hamilton, J. Patteron, the town- clerk (Mr. J. F. 'cane), the electrical engineer (Mr. .V. Wyatt), and the foreman (Mr. S. Clews).

Apologies for absence were receivd from Crs. G. H. Armstrong aftc I. H. Keith.

Pictures on Christmas Day.

Messrs. Wheeler and Smith appliec or a permit to screen pictures in tht 'remier Hal! on the evening of De ember 25. A suitable programme .vould be selected.

On the motion of the Mayor, sec >nded by Cr. Daysh, permission was granted subject to a suitable programme being unspooled, Cr. Patterson dissanting.

Auctioneer's License.

Permission was granted the clerl to issue an auctioneer's license t' Messrs. Buckland and Sons for Mi Reginald John Purdy, auctioneer Auckland.

Use of Hoardings.

An application for the use of tw< hoardings was made by Messrs Wheeler and Smith, picture showmen —Granted, at an annual fee of £5. * Repairs to Approach.

Mr. J. H. Webb requested that the entrance to his property, "Vauxhall,* be attended to.—Referred to the Works Committee. •

Use of Town Hal| Site.

The chairman of the Chautauqua committee, Mr. Frank Perkins, madt application- for the free use of the tew Town Hall site to erect a largt marquee for the Chautauqua «easoi to be held between January i 4 and 20, 1821. Cr. Hamilton moved, and Cr. Patterson seconded, that the request be acceded to.

The Mayor and Cr. Daysh contend:d that a fee should be imposed. Tht vlayor moved and Cr. Daysh secondet that the use of the site be grantee it a fee of £5.

On being put the amendment was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor, the voting being: The Mayor Crs. Daysh and McGough for; Crs Hamilton, Pattersqp and Morrow against.

Finance Committee Report.

The Finance Committee reporteo that it could not recommend Mr. Geo. Dix's application for remission of sanitary fee, he to be informed that it was against the borough by-laws for householders to remove nightsoil. The committee recommended that the offices be closed from December 2b to January 5 for the Christmas holidays. The report was adopted. Dog Registrar.

The town clerk was appointed dog registrar, and was instructed to make arrangements for one of the borough workmen to collect the fees, which were fixed at the same rate as last year, namely, 10s per dog, excepting for cattle andjrabbit'dogs, which fee was fixed at 2s 6d per dog. January Meeting.

It was decided to hold the next meeting on Wednesday, January 19, 1921.

Subway.

The Mayor reported that the work of constructing the subway at the southern end of the railway station had been commenced, and he was satisfied that from the plan it would be a splendid piece of work. It was for the council to proceed to make the -necessary arrangements for constructing the approaches. It was agreed to meet on Monday iporning at 10 o'clock with a view of selecting the route of the proposed road connecting the subway with Manukau Road. Finance. Accounts amounting to 1:1974 18s ad were submitted, approved of, and passed for payment. The debit balance of the district fund account was shown at £573 2s lOd.

General.

The Mayor reported that he and Crs. Armstrong, Hamilton, and the town clerk had interviewed the Prime Minister in connexion with the loan. He stated that the Premier was sympathetic towards the request, but stated that he could make arrangements to advance t30«0 to cover present commitments. Beyond this, the Mayor stated that Mr. Massey advised the council to "go siow," and not go in for any targe expenditure until there was an easement in the money market, which he thought would come about in 1022. The Mayor advised the committees to adopt the "go-slow" policy for a few months at least, and suggested that practically all loan work shculd cease.

The report was adopted". On the motion of Cr. Patterson, it was decided to urge upon the Minister for Railways the advisability of stopping the Thames express at Pfpakura on the Auckland journey, after the New Year, the reason being to allow children from Papakura attending ths»Pukekohe Technical High School to proceed home on the express. instead of having to wait for the train which is due to leave here at 11 minutes past six o'clock in the evening.

The foreman was authorised to tar and shell the East Street footpath 1 i om the bridge past Hevworth's Garrge.
